NURSE AS A ROLE MODEL.

TEN QUALITIES OF A GOOD NURSE ROLE MODEL.

  1. ASSERTIVENESS:Be assertive meaning that your point of view must be clear and direct while respecting others. Because this will help you in the establishment of nursing standard, and increase the nurse responsibilities in taking care of the patient. For example narcotics are locked up and non license professionals must not go into the narcotic room. If you look the other side and pretend because she is your sister or a friend then you are not assertive. If a patient smokes cigarettes in patient room and you pretend that you are not aware. You are not assertive because you must take action. The patient rooms in the hospitals have oxygen setup,if you pretend not to know and the patient set himself, the room and hospital on fire. How will you feel?.Assertiveness is doing the right thing. Improve the image of nursing and support other nurses commitment to a good cause. This implies a strong commitment to nursing and encouraging men in nursing to promote nursing profession.

2.Confidence : Demonstration of confidence in what you do. Evaluate your self esteem and try to meet up with any unmet positive goals. Feel good about yourself and believe that others hold you on a high standard. Learn new roles or new theories to avoid defensive mechanism.

3.COMMITMENT : Be committed in what you believe in. For example I believe that honesty is the best policy. Have a realistic plan to achieve a personal growth and development. Demonstrate commitments to nursing and protect public image of nurse. Must demonstrate proficiency in nursing.

4.PATIENT ADVOCATE: Be a patient advocate. Provide support and advocate for your patients and families. Recognize unfair assignments for your colleagues irrespective of race or gender. And speak up, if it is not a good assignment for you and your friends. Why should it be a good assignment for the nurse from REGISTRY?.Who probably does not know where the linen room or where the medication room is.Be a good role model, a great leader.

5.SELFLESS AND INSPIRE OTHERS:As a good nurse ,you should be willing to go extra miles, above and beyond for your patients. They may not know your name but they will remember how you make them feel. – Mayo Angelou.

6.BE UNIQUE : Have the audacity to be unique. Have and recognize the need to reach your potential through full development of one unique capability. Your uniqueness is like a supernatural life that makes you feel unique. You may not know it but the people around you know that you are different.

7.HUMILITY : Be humble and accept mistake. If you make mistake admit your mistake and let people watching you know that you made mistake. Dismiss the myth that to be a good nurse you should know everything. You don’t need to know everything but you must be better than others. And always willing to learn and make changes. For example the doctors don’t know everything but there are so many specialities. That is why they refer their clients to various specialist for example cardiologist, orthopaedic surgeon, Plastic surgeon etc. Must not practice defensively. Focus on 98 things that you did right and not on two things that you did wrong.

8.COMMUNICATION: Be a good communicator. Be able to communicate with everyone. Be good in delegation and delegate to others based on categories. That is what the Registered nurse can do is not the same as what the LVN or LPN can do.

9.RESPECT: Show respect to others.Respect is reciprocal show me some.Be caring and compassionate. If you lack respect, you lack caring attitude.

10.BE A CHAMPION: Value the right values, condemn the wrong values .Be calm, calculating, positive, confidential. Don’t hate or judgmental based on race or skin color sexual orientation because you can go wrong on that. Overcome obstacles, and use your mouth only when necessary. Maintain upright conscience and reject dishonesty.
