Importance Of Patient Education in Healthcare.

Patient education is very important for various reasons such as :

1.Compliance:

When patient are taught what to do, how to take care of themselves upon discharge they will follow instructions. For example how to perform activities like elevation of the affected extremity on the pillows they will comply.Repostioning of the affected extremities, dressing changes and follow up with doctor orders. Medication taking on time as scheduled.

2. Decreased Anxiety because you’re aware of what you need to be doing to recover.

3.Improve quality of lives of patients that we serve.

4. Health promotions and disease prevention. Patients and families education improves the quality of patient care.

5. Patients become part of their own plan of care. When you get patients and families involve they are willing to be more responsible for their own health.

6.Empowerment: When you provide adequate education and information you’re empowering your patients. If you the educator is not sure ask questions, don’t hesitate to bring someone who knows it better and will help your patients. 6.Decrease Frequent Fliers: There are patients that are frequent fliers and come to the hospitals to seek drugs. Some of these kind of patients need drug Rehabilitation treatment to cure the chronic loneliness and emptiness in them. Some of these patients ended up losing their lives without curing their chronic drug problems and Alcoholism.

6.Eliminate Deprivation of problems that are not addressed. When patients are well informed, they are willing to share some personal information.

7.Fear of unknown: some patients think that they can get addicted to the drugs that they are taking for pain so they stopped and ended up with some chronic pain.Education will eliminate the myth.

8.Desire for follow up appointments: when everything is going well patients are proud to follow up with their providers. But when it is not they want a second opinion and they want to change doctor.
