WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOURSELF.

Daily writing prompt
What’s your favorite thing about yourself?

There are so many favorite things about myself and these include kindness, the love of being a nurse, cooking, dancing ,singing even though I have been told countless times that my voice is not melodious. I know that I can sing .I love helping someone to help myself. And at the same time I am assertive I hate liars.

I learned how to cook at the age of eleven years old.I can make snacks, cook delicious meals such as rice, okra soup, vegetable soup, egusi soup ,spaghetti and other delicates. I love preparing balance meals .I enjoy taking good care of my patients.

As an effective and efficient nurse I understand the importance of patient assessment. Assessment is one of the steps of nursing process extremely important in patients and nurses relationships. I gather data about patients of different culture from me, giving me the opportunity to know my clients more.

I view my patients as the expert of his or her own life and understand their own culture more than the nurse because he or she exist in that culture. If you as the nurse understand the patients as the expert and communicate with patients with respect, caring, compassion, genuineness and empathy. Then both the patient and nurse in the interethnic relationship will develop better understanding. Sterotype, racism ,cultural differences, discrimination will be controlled learning and education from both side will be achieved.

Communication is very important. It is the interpersonal process that will actualize the nursing process. The nurse understanding patient of different culture and background will validate to ensure a better outcome.

As a nurse I understand that a language difference does not mean that my patients has difficulty in communicating verbally rather that there is a barrier in communication. And appropriate translation or interpretation is needed.I usually use the blue phone( Cyracom phone) at patient beside to communicate. My patient is happy and I am happy. In that case helping my patient help me to feel accomplished and satisfied.

Long time ago ,I had a young man that I took good care of . He doesn’t speak English language and unfortunately for me I understand very little Spanish. One way of communication became the use of interpreter or the use of phone 📱. This man of no fault of his own had testicular cancer. I happened to be his nurse every day that I worked. And I was a workaholic once upon a time.So I worked everyday. I took care of him almost every day.

Nurses threatened to go on strike.I am emotionally attached to this young man. Each time that I think or looked at him.I saw tears dropped from my eyes. So what do I do?.

Through an interpreter I asked him about his family he told me that they were in Mexico. I involved the social worker to see if he can help him to invite his mother over to see him Meanwhile nurses are still seriously planning to walk out of the hospital on strike. Their demands included better benefits, better pay and no mandatory overtime. I vowed not to strike but to come to work everyday and help this patient. So I came to work to help him out.He is on Foley catheter, very poor appetite and can hardly ambulate. He was also constipated. I has been given medications to relieve his constipation. I worked 16hours back to back to help out.He was very grateful. I was emotionally satisfied that I could help. Some nurses called me a traitor. Indeed a traitor in a positive way.
