I am a team player with a great interpersonal skills. And as a team player I love pulling people together to work as a team. Do you see yourself as a leader is an under statement because I see myself as a great leader .
In nursing to achieve your goals you must assume the role of a leader to make sure that positive health care outcome is obtained, with your colleagues, the organization and the interdisciplinary team. ( Physicians, Physical therapist, respiratory therapist, and other ancillary group)What are the attributes of a leader that I must develop in order to be successful leader?.
I must be effective ,efficient, experienced, skilled, ambitious, able-bodied, motivated, assistent, goals directed and ready to guide others to follow my direction.
I tend to play the cards of leader taking my followers in the right direction. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. As a leader you must be able to achieve obtainable goals otherwise you will lose the respect from your followers.
I have the personality traits of a leader.I have the confidence, honesty,( I say it as it is)creativity, ready to face challenges, adventurous, agreeable, empathy, compassion, willingness to go extra miles.
I have been a successful leader in so many areas ,at work, group organizations and in my personal life. But sometimes I will hit frustration. And part of my frustration is when I realize that people are afraid of me.I do not want people to be afraid of me.I recalled a vivid situation where I was in charge in my department and my nursing assistant came to me and said that she wants to go home that she is sick.We had thirty four patients and the patients were very sick and some are bedridden, incontinent of bowel and bladder, with only one nursing assistant on the floor.
So I had to work as a nursing assistant with my role as the team leader.Upon assessment I honestly told the nursing assistant that she is not sick but pregnant. I knew that she is pregnant but she did not know that she is pregnant or in denial. She said that she can’t be pregnant because she met her boyfriend once. The button line is that she is sick and I should have respected that .I kept quiet continued my cna work, charge nurse work ,responding to the doctors, managers, supervisor, hospital operation by the time that I got to the next patient for us to reposition she has left.It was an extremely busy day on the floor.
I looked for other nurses to assist me with patients care. Two hours later I didn’t see her so I called the supervisor and notify her.She told me that she went home sick. She went home sick and the supervisor did not inform me until I called. That was not so great.
However, one hour after I reported her missing, the supervisor sent me two certified nursing assistant to help clean up my patients and tidying up the patients before the next shift. All the patients were cleaned and changed before the next shift. I had enough time to tidy up the desk ,print out the census, print out the kardex for the thirty four patients, ready for the next nursing staff.I was grateful that I achieve my goals for that day .It was a difficult day that ended up well. There was no code blue,no rapid response team and patient did not fall .
After two weeks the nursing assistant that went home sick returned back to work. She came to me to confirm that she is pregnant and apologized to me. I apologized to her too.I smiled and learned my lesson. The lesson learned was never to say everything as it is, rather to be more diplomatic. She is sick she is sick. And eight months later she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. If you want to be a good and effective leader you should not be the boss but someone that will be respected and followed by exemplary leadership. What went wrong?. What actually went wrong is that she didn’t believe that she is pregnant since she was forty three years old and she met her boyfriend once. Here is my mistake I think I should have allowed her to go home since sickness can be subjective. I cannot measure how she is feeling internally.

In this picture who is the leader?.The leader is the bareheaded man in a short white pant and a blue top same top as members of his group with a dark sun glasses. Is he the oldest or the most educated?.
He is not the most educated or the oldest but he cause others to go along sometimes it can be under duress. He headed and directed the operations of the group. He bring his group together by reasoning with them.He interacts with his group maintaining improved performance and high expectations from his group to attain his goals.
There are three types of leadership, the autocratic leaders, democratic leaders and the laissez-faire style of leadership.
Autocratic: The autocratic leader is the leader that has complete control and make decisions for the group. The nurse leader that is regarded as an autocratic leader is the leader that is firm, confident, resistant, self assured ,insistent and dominant with or without the intention to be dominating. Some autocratic leaders can be very controlling without any feelings for their group. In that situation their decisions are final. The autocratic style of leadership often helps for all tasks to be completed.
Democratic leadership: This is characterized by decisions being shared among the group. There is a sense of equality among the followers and their leaders. The followers are encouraged and empowered to develop their skills and knowledge to meet up with the objectives of the group.
Laissez-faire style of leadership: In this style of leadership the leader of the group gives all power to members of the group. This style of leadership encourages independent activities by the group. This cannot be seen in the hospitals since achiement of tasks can be very difficult. Hospitals used to be autocratic leaders but have gradually moved to Democratic style of leadership. In this style of leadership everyone is motivated to do more.
