What is Crisis intervention?.

Crisis Intervention is a five steps problem solving technique which is specifically designed to help promote a better adaptation and improve future outcomes.In crisis situation the affected person cannot function effectively and the use of the usual coping mechanism might not solve the problem. The individual will need Intervention to return his or her normal equilibrium. This will include been able to cope with future crisis.

The steps are as follows:

1.Identify what the problem is.What is the cause of the crisis?.Identification of the problem will lead to alternative solutions.

2.What are alternative solutions to the problem?.All possible options are needed to come up with a solution.

3.Select from the alternative so.The choices should be individualized based on priorities and the person’s needs.

4.Implementation of a plan. The plan developed should be put into action to see if it works. Provide support and encouragement to the individual in crisis for the plan to be achieved.

5.Evaluate the outcome of the plan. The effectiveness of the plan need to be carefully evaluated. If it is effective it will boost self confidence and for future reference.

NB: During the crisis Intervention it will be the nurse priority to help patients recognize their level of stress and encourage them to accept what cannot be changed. Also to change that which cannot be accepted.

Crisis Intervention Centers:

This may be part of a hospital or a freestanding center.

Function are as follows:

1.Provide 24hours services to the public. 2.Hotline services for people who are suicidal.

3.Provide support services to those people abusing drugs or alcohol and needed Psychiatric counseling.

4.Provide information and services for victims of physical abuse and rape. Nurses working at the crisis intervention Centers must know community resources Centers to assist their clients successfully.

5.Competent,strong communication and counseling skills are required.
