Sterotype is IRRATIONAL or ILLOGICAL BELIEFS.Sterotype and prejudices are often attitudes that we develop through our interactions with others,family and friends in each person’s social and cultural system.It is common for even well educated health care professionals to have sterotype of people who are not of the same background or culture with them.
Sterotype starts from childhood experiences and this can affect their relationship with people in their sterotype groups. For example the wrongfully assumption of the nurse or healthcare professionals to believe that older adults are not in pain and does not need pain medications so they should not be relieved from their pain or that seniors are highly irritable,cranky and avoid paying attention to their needs. Some nurses will take care of patients that are of the same background or race but ignore people of different backgrounds.So their complaints are treated as unimportant or irrelevant.
As professional nurses you must deliver high quality of care to all patients irrespective of diagnosis, age,ethnicity,gender, religion, cultural backgroun or lifestyle.
