What are the clinical signs of death?.

There are various definitions of deaths listed below for your review.

Definition of death that was proposed by Havard University committee stated that some characteristics must be present for 24hours before death can be pronounced. These characteristics. include:

A.Lack of movement or breathing.

B.No responsiveness or receptivity.

C. Zero reflexes.

D. Flat encephalogram or lack of brain activity.

The clinical signs of impeding death, near death or approaching death are seen as follows:

1.Unable to swallow.

2.Decreased in gastrointestinal and urinary tract activity.

3.Pitting edema.

4.Low blood pressure.

5.Bowel and bladder incontinence.

6.Loss of motion,sensation and reflexes.

7.Cyanosis.

8.Irregular or noisy Respiration and cheyne-stroke Respiration.

The patient may not lose consciousness.

Death can also be defined as when a person sustained irreversible cessation of circulation and respiratory functions or irreversible cessation of the brain activity.

Death can also be caused by war,accidents suicide, illegal practice, medical malpractice. In these cases coroner must be notified according to the law.The coroner may decide and order autopsy for the deceased.Also a death of a patient within 24hours of admission must be reported to the coroner, and proper procedures followed.

  1. Great list! I’ve worked with a lot of people with moderate to severe dementia over the years, and I have seen the signs you have described a lot of times. Sometimes, the clinical staff can tell that the end is near, and say to relatives to come and see the patient. 👍
